In The "Just Chill Already!" file

You know what I think of V-day, but this is ridiculous. Valentine’s day is actually outlawed in Saudi Arabia.

And closer to home the Quebec “language police” is cracking down on an Irish pub because they have English only signs on the walls. Beer ads and such. It’s called DECOR you morons!

  1. Wow, I think Quebec has finally lost it… I knew Saudi Arabia’s strict laws about mixing men and women (we do a lot of consulting work there) but yeah this IS ridiculous. LOL deliveries in the middle of the night… and it happens regularly? I’ll never understand them.

  2. BBC says:

I hope you had a nice V day, naked.

  3. geewits says:

Jeez, I hope the QLP don’t find out you have an English language blog!

  4. Ian Lidster says:

All I can say is ‘Bedad!’

  5. XUP says:

I think France should crack down on what Quebeckers are doing to the French language — that should keep them all busy for a while

  6. furiousBall says:

if the signs said surrender in English would that be ok?

  7. Wendy says:

I thought Quebec was France WITHOUT the attitude?

  8. Dave says:

The Language laws in Quebec was one big reason my Dad moved us out of the province. It’s an unfortunate law.

  9. Josie says:

We have the same problem in Vancouver with the Chinese signage. Only here, it doesn’t have to be in English as well. So half the city is now in a foreign language, and it’s not even one of the “official” foreign languages.

  10. I like the idea of Valentine’s Scrooges – I was wondering the other dayif there isn’t an appropriate verison of bah humbug for it.

  11. Rachel says:

I’m not suprised the Arabs banned Valentines day. It IS a christianized Pagan holiday, after all, and Saudi Arabia is not one of the more liberal or secular Islamic nations. In fact, considering the Islamic conservatisim movements gripping the area, it makes sense that they would do that.

  12. Jazz says:

HD – Regarding the language laws, when it concerns going after the little guy, Quebec lost it a long time ago.BBC – LOLGeewits – Shhhh.. Let’s keep it our little secret.Ian – Ok, Bedad right back atcha!Xup – Of course I’m not sure they have that much to teach us, what with their: Shopping and footing, and Parking and the million and a half other English words they use when perfectly sensible French words exist.Furiousball – Probably not. We surrender in French or not at all!Wendy – I think French implies attitude wherever you go.Dave – Certain aspects of it are unfortunate perhaps, but I do think people who immigrate to Quebec should be obliged to learn the language. You don’t go live in Norway and not speak Norwegian. Quebec is French and I think it’s normal the children of immigrants should go to French school. Canada is a huge place if you want to speak English.Josie – Yeah, I guess you’re much better off learning Mandarin then French in BC.Citizen – If you come up with a “bah humbug” equivalent for V-day, feel free to let me know…Rachel – it makes sense, in their view of things, but damn whatever happened to live and let live? OK, that’s a stupid question as pertains to Saudi Arabia…
