Life with a Cook

Posted: October 30, 2008 in Uncategorized

Mr. Jazz cooks. He pretty much does all the cooking at our house. And Mr. Jazz is incapable of following a recipe.

Last night’s truly delicious dinner – pasta sautéed with lemon, veggies and arugula – started out in one of my magazines as a recipe for carrots sautéed in lemon butter and oregano.

I rest my case.

  1. VioletSky says:

Creativeness in the kitchen – never a bored chef.

  2. furiousBall says:

that’s awesome and i always appreciate someone like Mr. Jazz that does what they enjoy in the form of improvisation, it’s like eating a nice musical jam session

  3. Mr. Jazz says:

fuball – Thanks: it is indeed like music to our taste buds. My motto is: gotta get rid of leftover stuff in the fridge while it’s still edible, hence the improv. There will be no wasting on my watch! Only problem of course is repeating the same recipe ’cause me, I don’t take notes. Jazz left out the chicken which was actually sausage in another recipe from the same mag.

  4. Urban Animal says:

The guys also do that. Thomas cannot see a recipe without changing it somehow. And it usually works, although we’ve had a few “interesting” experiences lol

  5. Sounds good to me..!Now, I know Christmas is a long way off; but, I just couldn’t wait… I’m in the midst of gift-wrapping an extremely early Christmas present for all my delightful favourite bloggers – it’ll be ready this evening – so, if you’d like to pop by my blog anytime after that, you may pick it up and enjoy..:)

All the best cooks are incapable of following a recipe. That’s what also makes them terrible bakers. I love cooking because it’s a free-for-all. Baking, you have to follow the recipe exactly or else you end up with flavoured hockey pucks.

  7. Ha – you’re husband and I are kindred spirits.

  8. Susan Tuttle says:

Yum! My hubby cooks too — isn’t it great!?Susanxo

  9. geewits says:

-SIGH-. I’ve been married THREE times and none of them cook! You got it on the first try. Oh well. I’m just like Mr. Jazz. I do not follow recipes, just get inspiration from them. Mom always asks me for “the recipe” when I tell her about a great meal and I have nothing to tell her. I make stuff up as I go along. She’s just the oposite and needs a recipe. I don’t get that at all. And good choice not to make cooked carrots. Eeeeeew!

  10. geewits says:

Oh! I just read the comments and Xup is right. I do not bake. How funny. I’ve never heard that before.

  11. VioletSky says:

I don’t bake either for that very reason – I always use a recipe as a guideline, then substitute for the 1/3 ingredients I don’t have on hand.

  12. Jazz says:

Violetsky – Maybe that’s why I don’t much like cooking. No creativity.Fuball – I like the comparisonMr J – Oh, so that’s why food doesn’t come when called since I’ve been with you, you won’t let it grow and develop into a whole new life form.UA – I can’t remember the last time it didn’t work for Mr. J. Me on the other hand…Here – I’ll check it out as soon as I have a minute!XUP – Which would explain why I like baking and not “real” cooking.Citizen – Maybe y’all should cook together sometime.Susan – Great indeed, especially since he does practically all the cooking.Geewits – I’m like your mom, I need a recipe. I can’t just go to the fridge and combine random things. Well, I can but you might not want to actually eat my concoctions.Violetsky – The only think I like to do is bake.

  13. Love this post – my husband (of almost 20yrs, I might add..!) can’t even boil an egg properly..!I never use recipes…I usually start with one but then kind of go off at a tangent..! Never mind, it’s always edible (nobody in the house has yet died of food poisening..) and nobody complains , so…Have a great day..:)
