Friday night at the cottage. Getting ready to warm up some falafel as an appetizer and then grill up the saffron marinated chicken we bought at Akhavan Montreal’s kick ass Iranian market.

Unfortnately, it has been raining practically non-stop since May, and damned if the deck doesn’t seem to be growing some sort of slime from being wet.

If I wanted west coast weather, I’d go live in Vancouver, eh?

Me: Be careful out there, the deck is really slippery.
He: No problem (as he proceeds to fire up the grill)

Me: Here are the falafel

I set them down on the BBQ, turned around and proceeded to fly none too elegantly (though come to think of it, I’ve never done anything elegantly in my life) through the air and land on the wet and slimy deck. With a thump. A decidedly non-elegant thump.

Of course.

Because I had just warned him to be extra careful. Luckily I wasn’t holding the falafel at the time. They were saved, hurray!

Because it’s all about the food of course.

But, since I believe that if you do something, you should do it right (and unfortunately my doing usually involves some sort of bodily harm), my thigh* is in rather less great a shape than the falafel were.

Who knew bruises cause copious swelling and stretch to 5 inches across?

Dinner, by the way, was delicious.

* Weird angle, I know, but I figured that having my butt in the picture would be in the realm of waaaay too much information.

  1. Your humourous way of describing this painful fall – has me grimacing and smiling at the same time. Looks like you broke a couple of blood vessels in there.Take care of yourself!

  2. Wow. And Ouch! That almost looks like colorful abstract art.

  3. Rachel says:

Thank god the falafel was saved!OOOO girl, that is one beaut of a bruise! Day-um.Reminds me of the montage sequence in that movie, "A League of Their Own", when one of the players slid into homebase and came out of it with a serving-dish sized brisue on her thigh. Much like the one on yours.Day-UM, that looks exceedingly painful.

  4. Maddy says:

They would have to be THE Best to justify a bruise like that! I'm told avocados and kiwis help reduce…….want to check it out? Purple and green……maybe not.Cheers

  5. geewits says:

Ouch! That looks like something I would do. And oddly enough, I marinated chicken in saffron and lemon and cooked it on the grill Monday night. But I stayed upright the whole time.

  6. Suldog says:

    Yikes! That's a beauty!The bruise is impressive, too 🙂

  7. Big Brother says:

Ouch lil sister… maybe you should wear cleats on your shoes. You know the kind that you can buy in the winter to pull over your boots to not slip on the ice. ;o)

  8. pinklea says:

That is quite the bruise. You never do anything by halves, do you?!And Vancouver weather has been sunny and in the mid-20s (very little humidity) all week , with more of the same predicted. Just thought you'd like to know …

  9. mrwriteon says:

Ooh — ouch indeed! Poor baby. That is an awful bruise. Don't do that again, OK? Sorry about your shitty weather. Ours here on the normally wet west coast is absolutely exquisite day after day after day after day etc. Don't mean to gloat, but it's our turn.

  10. Jazz says:

Bonnie – Humour is the only way to do it, otherwise, it's just pathetic.SAW – Wow, maybe I should take pics of my various bruises, frame them and sell them to a gallery!Maddy – Purple and green… definitely not.Geewits – You stayed upright? So it's not the saffron then?Suldog – It's all beautiful.. ;-)BB – Cleats. Yeah. Actually that sounds like a plan…Pinklea – Good weather? You're having good weather? I was actually relieved today because it's overcast and rainy after 2 whole days of sun. I'm not quite sure what to do with good weather anymore. I just might have to hate you.

  11. Jazz says:

Ian – It's not the first such bruise I've inflicted upon myself, nor is it likely to be the last, and as I said to Pink – I just might have to hate you now.

  12. ticknart says:

Seems to me that good falafel is worth some heavy bruising, especially in North America.

  13. Jeaux says:

Never trust a slimy deck.Ouch. This happened on Friday? You must be paralyzed right about now. I trust Mr. Jazz has been making regular missions to Bilboquet for you…

  14. XUP says:

Holy shit — thank god you probably won't be able to make it to Ottawa this weekend. That's hideous. And more than a little scary. Ouch!! Also, I'm really bored of the endless rain. I came from Halifax to get away from this crappy sort of summer

  15. Gaelyn says:

You should be more careful, eh?Glad dinner was good.Interesting angle.

  16. Warty Mammal says:

OUCCHHHHH!!!!That bruise looks terribly painful. I'm glad you didn't break a bone or something.Despite that, I envy your rain.

  17. Jazz says:

Ticknart – You're right. Good falafel are worth any amount of pain…Jeaux – Hey, I never thought of that. Maybe I should send him there – though actually by now it's not that painful, just hideous.XUP – I've begun to think the only solution is to move to Texas and be someone's illegal alien maid.Gaelyn – Yep, at least dinner was good…WM – You envy our rain? How about a house swap?

  18. Jill says:

Holy crap! That looks painful.Totally sounds like something I would do. I gave myself a black eye once by hitting myself in the face with my car keys.

  19. VioletSky says:

It has only just started raining here. Not that you want to know that. That bruise would match my living room wall. Though it's possibly a different colour by now?

  20. paula says:

That's some bruise, Jazz! But I don't have to tell you that. I hope it's not as painful as it looks. Thanksfully you didn't break anything! And I'm thinking in cartoons these days and this would have made a nice 4 paneler. : )

  21. Jazz says:

Jill – it's nice to know I'm not alone…Violetsky – No, I do NOT want to know that. And actually it's beginning to veer towards yellow and green with some blue added for extra colour.Paula – Cartoon it! I dare you.

  22. Pouty Lips says:

Holy crap! My leg hurts just from looking at it. Elevate that thing now.

  23. Jocelyn says:

You SOOOOO had to outdo my "looksie: an owie on my knee" post, didn't you?Well played, sisterfriend. That thing is like a horsehead nebula.
