And all’s right with the world

Posted: October 6, 2011 in Uncategorized

Mr. Jazz having been on vacation a full week before me (to this I say Grrrrrrrr), I’ve been taking public transport to work in the mornings, rather than getting my usual lift. And surprising as it may seem to you, this won’t be a rant on public transport. My, aren’t I just being all unique today.

Taking the bus means leaving the house at the time I’m usually struggling out of bed (I would say Grrrrrrr again, except I simply don’t have the energy at that hour).

I leave the house at 6:45.   Six. Forty. Five.  An ungodly hour if ever there was one.

And yet this morning (and to a lesser extent yesterday), I found myself, if not liking it, at least appreciating it. The neighborhood is a different place at that time of day. Peaceful. Birds chirping, the sky all rosy, hardly any cars or people – except obviously those walking their dogs.

I almost felt I should get a dog to walk, except I’ve no doubt the whole walking the dog at 6:30 in January in the -20 cold would get real old real quick.  Freakishly early mornings? Not so much if it has to become an every day thing.

The sky was almost clear, rosy with the rising sun, it was cold and crisp ( in 6 months it would seem positively tropical as mornings go) and all was right with the world.

I love when that happens. That sort of click, that moment when, despite everything that might be wrong, you experience a moment of absolute and utterly perfect happiness and peace.

Tomorrow I’ll feel as if today was sleeping in. Jazz will be a grumpy camper tomorrow morning, but it will be offset by the fact that tomorrow we’re on our way to California for a couple of weeks. Which will be offset in turn by the horrendous lines at the airport and the whole “Ma’am we have to search your bag what’s that there? DO NOT TOUCH THE BAG MA’AM!!!” thing. Seriously, do you think I’d be stupid enough to pack a bomb in my carry on? Really? Wouldn’t I be more likely to have the explosive in my fillings to explode when I chomp down in annoyance at some point during the flight when that child will just not stop. Carrying. On. And. Kicking. My. SEAT!!!!.

Of course, that’ll be offset by the fact that we’re going back to one of my top 3 favourite places in the world: Palm Springs.

And no, I don’t golf, but there’s lovely hiking to be had. And shopping. And good food. And Trader Joe’s**. I’ll have access to a Trader Joe’s!!!!

And Saturday? I will sleep in as long as I damn well please. So there.

**  I’d be willing to sell my soul if I had one to have a TJ’s here in Montreal.

The early morning is really a wonderful time of day.It is the going to bed at 8PM that sucks. I also found that I really missed taking the TTC when I got a car (though my new job became a 10 minute drive but would have been a 45-50 minute 3 bus + 2 subway trip). Still, it was nice when it wasn’t crowded.

Never been to Palm Springs and have no idea why something called Trader Joe’s could be soooo great. But enjoy!!

I don’t like mornings either. Yet once I finally do get out there I’m usually amazed how nice it is. Sure glad I don’t have to do public transportation.

Try not to get busted at the airport and have a great time in, hopefully, sunny California. It’s snowing here.

I never would have guessed you for a Trader Joe’s gal. In fact, reading back over this post, with the exception of your love for Palm Springs, I was beginning to think you had been hacked because I knew it wasn’t April Fool’s Day. 🙂
I think it is cool that we will be on exact opposite sides of the country at the same time and am looking forward to waving over at you on Sunday. Have loads of fun!

I LOVE TJ. Plus they have a great wine selection. And great snacks. Cause I obviously don’t do the whole grocery shopping thing.

And the tequila is so much cheaper than here. MARGARITAS!!!

Damn, I come across as a total lush don’t I?

And yeah, the picture/wave will be fun!

I have almost the identical Indian Canyons photo. Isn’t that a heavenly spot for a hike. You are so making me long to go back. Anyway, suck in all those rays and may they carry you through a Montreal winter. Going to miss you, my friend.

PS: I’m likin’ ya new look.

i feel the same way about early mornings. they are so difficult but occasionally lovely. as for flying…..ugh…..was such a trial coming home from seattle. even when it’s not a trial it feels like being herded like cattle. do hope you have a wonderful time in CA though!

  7. VioletSky says:

Wow. You have been busy creating a whole new look to come home to. I am impressed. I’m lucky if I get the dishes put away before I go on hols.

Oh my, look at this blog! I almost didn’t recognize it!
But yes, early mornings are generally yucky, though sometimes there is a small moment of niceness to them. Palm Springs – a great place to lie around and soak up the sun, as there’s not heaps to do, really. Unless you golf. Which I don’t. But I like looking at the hotels and golf courses. Which reminds me, why is it that you, from Montréal, make that cross-continent-very-long flight to PS so often, whereas I, from Vancouver, haven’t made the only-two-hours flight there for about fifteen years?!

I’ve only recently discovered the early morning…

Hope you had (or are having) a wonderful vacation! Like the new look, by the way.

  11. alison says:

Enjoy Cali! Love the new look.

I peel away from the blog world for a few weeks and come back to find you have THE COOLEST new design here! Is it a template, or is it an original? (never fear, I won’t copy it!)

Anyhow, the joy of being near a Trader Joe’s cannot be overstated.

As someone who’s not a morning person at all, I know what you mean–about those times when the peaceful beauty of the first sun feels special and surprising.

  13. Pearl says:

    JOIN US…

I leave the house at 6:20. I could swing by, pick you up, we could marvel at the serenity and beauty of the morning together. 🙂
